Character Naming

As an Author naming your Character is an important step right after coming up with the plot. I am here to help you choose the right character name for you and your story.

Make sure your character name is Genre Appropriate. Make sure if it's a Historical Fiction novel or takes place in a real time period that the name was used then. Or if it's a fictionalized place then you can be as creative as you wish.

Just have fun with naming your character. It is after all your story.

Integrity

Meaning: (One who is Truthful; Of Good Character, the Quality of being Honest and having Strong Moral Principles, Moral Uprightness.)

Origin: (English, English (Rare), American)

Pronunciation: (ihNTEHGRAHTiy)

Gender: Female

I saw this word when I was driving and saw a billboard that said Integrity Hills and I was like that’s gorgeous and I wonder if it could be used as a name. This is a virtue that is a rare name unlike other virtue names like Honor, Serenity, Justice, Prudence, Chastity, Mercy, Felicity, Truly (pretty rare too), Clarity (pretty rare too), Cherish (pretty rare too), and Harmony *see all these on list of posts*. I love the meanings. Also since one of the bearers of the name Aristides *see on list of posts* was said to be just and was renowned for his Integrity it would be cool if Aristides was paired somehow with the name Integrity.

Java

Meaning: (Home, Distant, Coffee Infused Beverage)

Origin: (Indonesian, American)

Pronunciation: (JAH-vuh, To know how to pronounce this name go to this link and run your cursor over the word: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=java )

Gender: Female, Possible Uni-Sex

I used to watch a show many years ago when I was teenager that was called The Tribe, which was about teenagers in a post-apocalyptic world where adults were killed by a virus which left kids alone to band together in tribes. One of the characters names was Java; her sisters were Siva and Ebony. So I’ve had this name on my list for a while but I had a hard time finding a meaning. The meanings are decent, most people would think of this name as a nickname for coffee or the computer program though.

Eisley

Meaning: (Cheerful, Americanized form of Swiss Eisele.)

Origin: (American, Swiss)

Pronunciation: (eyes-lee)

Gender: Female, Possibly Uni-Sex

I love the pleasant meaning of this name. A few years ago country singer Hilary Scott of Lady Antebellum named her daughter a similar spelling but same pronounced name Eisele, which I think is a purer original spelling but I didn’t really like it at all. Then a few months ago I saw this spelling and kind of like it. I mean I like the meaning and the look is unique. I think however it would look in my opinion better as maybe a surname or middle name.

Alijah

Meaning: (Derived from Elijah (Jehovah is God), The Lord is My God, My God is Yahweh)

Origin: (Hebrew, American)

Pronunciation: (ə-LIY-zhə, aa-LIY-DZ-aa)

Gender: Uni-Sex

I first heard this name after Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett had her baby girl earlier this year. It was a sad business relating around the marriage of Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett and her husband but that aside as relating to the name of their daughter, I really like it. At first I was thrown off by it and like what is that name. Then I researched it. I don’t think it is a name I think would fit too many characters but I would like to see how an author might go with this name. I get a very fantasy vibe from this name.

The meanings are lovely. Alijah to me does seem a female version of Elijah but I heard of someone naming their son Alijah, so what ever spelling you use I think would be interesting and cool to see how it might work out. Elijah is a wonderful biblical name and I think Alijah just brings a different but still similar feel to the name.

Caliana

Meaning: (Castle, a Moorish princess for whom a splendid palace was built in Spain. Combination of Callie and Ana. Calianna is a province in Italy.)

Origin: (Arabic, American)

Pronunciation: (cal-E-ah-na, K AH-L-EH-AW N-AH, K-AH-LEE-AW-N-EH)

Gender: Female

I forget where I first saw this but I have used Callie before as a character name. This would be a great lengthened version as would Calandra *see on list of posts*. I have used Calandra nicknamed Callie but Caliana is really pretty and would work really well with Callie nickname. The meanings are lovely and it is just a very beautiful feminine name that I would love to read more about.

Andra

Meaning: (Man, Male, Manly, Warrior, Strong, Courageous, Brave, Virility, Virile, Feminine form of Andrew.)

Origin: (Old Greek, English, American, French, Scottish)

Pronunciation: (AHN-druh, AHn-dra, AENDRah)

Gender: Female, Possibly Uni-Sex

One of my old friends has a good friend named Andra. She talks about her a lot and so the name has begun to grow on me so much so that I decided to add it to my blog. It is a unique looking and sounding name but not too different. The meanings are decent and strong. For some reason I could see a defiant princess or noble lady in a fantasy novel being named this.

Symphony

Meaning: (Musical Piece for Orchestra, Sounding Together, Concordant in Sound, Consonance of Sounds, Harmony, especially of Sound or Color. The English word Symphony is itself of the Greek “Symphonos”. The name is usually chosen for its association with music. It was made known by the British science fiction TV series Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967-1968), in which the five female pilots were codenamed Rhapsody, Symphony, Harmony, Destiny, and Melody.)

Origin: (American, English, Greek)

Pronunciation: (SIHMFahNiy, SIMF-uh-nee)

Gender: Female

When I was looking up Rhapsody *see on list of posts* I came across Symphony.  Just like Rhapsody, Symphony is a very beautiful musical name. I also found it cool that it was one of the names that was made known by the British science fiction TV series Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967-1968), in which the five female pilots were codenamed Rhapsody, Symphony, Harmony, Destiny, and Melody *see on list of posts, except Destiny which isn’t on this blog*. I had never heard of the show so I looked it up. They used marionettes but I think it would be cool if remade now into a live human cast TV Series, because it sounds pretty cool.

Now I could see any real life person or story characters named Symphony being very talented and dedicated, I could see a dancer, perhaps a ballerina, very beautiful, kind soul girl, and one to stick up for family and friends.

Just like Rhapsody, Symphony is easily recognized and pronounceable. And both are lovely.

Enola

Meaning:  (Possibly the reversal of the word “Alone”. The name Enola is often taken as a Native American name, but its probable etymology is an English one: simply “Alone” backwards. The name appeared in the late 19th Century and gained popularity with similar names like Zola, Nola, and Leola. Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima during WWII. The airplane was named after the pilot Paul Tibbet’s mother, Enola Gay Tibbets, who was in turn named after the heroine of a novel. The name has also appeared in literature, borne by a character also called Enola Gay in Martin Amis’ black comic novel London Fields (1989).)

Origin: (English, American)

Pronunciation: (ee-NO-luh, iy-NOWLuw)

Gender: Female, Possibly Uni-Sex

I was watching the 1995 movie Waterworld the other day. It’s been on quite a lot recently. Anyway it was about the world having no more land, supposedly. Everyone lives in floating cities and towns, as the whole world is water, as the title entails. So this little girl who is the key to it all is named Enola. I won’t spoil the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it but I just wanted to give details on where I at first saw this name.

The name always intrigued me since I first saw the movie when it came out in ‘95. Now that I saw it again I decided to add it here. I found it quite interesting that this name had such a famous history as being the name of the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima during WWII.

I usually don’t like names that are just words spelled backwards….ex. Nevaeh which is Heaven spelled backwards. But Enola really doesn’t peeve me off at all like some backward spelled word / names. It seems fresh but with an interesting history of use. I am actually thinking of using it as the name of one of my races of people in one of my future stories. The story will be using the names Amita and Jensi too *see on list of posts*. Anyway in the story Enola is more than just interesting looking the meaning of Alone ties into the races background. Anyway I really just like this name a lot. I would love to see this used more, but in a proper setting.

Meaning: (Manly, Virile, Man, Warrior, Variant of Andrea, Combination of Andrew and Tina.)

Origin: (Greek, English, American)

Pronunciation: (ae-NDRIY-Naa, ann-dree-nah)

Gender: Female

This is one of The Little Mermaids sister’s names. I was seeing The Little Mermaid DVD special edition advertised and I went into looking into her sister’s names. Andrina is a very strong name with a good look and warrior like meanings. This is a name that is unique but still looks like the more common names like Andrea, Audrey, and Adriana. Good Nicknames: Andy, Drina, Rin, and Rina.

Novalee

Meaning: (New Field, Nova: New Lee: Meadow, Clearing)

Origin: (American, English, Latin, German)

Gender: Female

One of my favorite movies is “Where the Heart Is”, with Natalie Portman. It’s the movie about a pregnant woman who gets left at a Wal Mart by her boyfriend. Natalie Portman is the pregnant woman and her name is Novalee Nation. I have added Nova and Lee to my blog in some form but now I am combining them here. It’s a beautiful name.

Aeryn

Meaning: (Is an Americanized Celtic name meaning “Daughter of Ireland”, Ireland, Mountain of Strength, American spelling of Erin, Derived from the Gaelic Erinn, the dative case of Erie, which is the Irish name for Ireland. Though Erin is popular in England and the U.S, it is not normally bestowed as a given name in Ireland. Berry. Aeryn Sun is a character on Farscape a Sci-fi T.V Series.)

Origin: (Irish, Celtic, Gaelic, English, Welsh, American, Hebrew)

Pronunciation: (Air-un, AIR-en, AIR-in, AIR-ihn, EHRIHN)

Gender: Female

I was watching the Syfy Channels 20th Anniversary Special a few weeks ago. They were talking about toward the beginning the show called Farscape. I had never heard of it and so I did some research. It ran from March 1999 to March 2003 so it was explained why I had never heard of it because when it ran I was young and wasn’t into Sci-fi yet. One of the main characters was named Aeryn Sun (Played by Claudia Black). They were interviewing Claudia Black on Syfy Channel 20th Anniversary Special and below her name had the name of the character she played which was Aeryn. I think it is a super cute name. I have never been a fan of Aaron / Erin because it is so common but this is a super cute spelling. I would love to see and hear this name more often. It does seem very Sci-fi / Fantasy like but I think that’s why I love it. Some I have read have mispronounced this and I think that is ridiculous, how could you mispronounce this name.

Lordyn / Lordin

Meaning: (An Enchanting Woman)

Origin: (English, American)

Pronunciation: (LAORDIHN, LAORDAYN)

Gender: Female

I was at Wal-Mart the other day and in the books and magazine section I saw a book of 8,000 baby names. I was flipping through to see if they had my sisters name which is Lorinda *See on my list of posts*. The book didn't have her name but I found a few names I think are super cute. Lordyn was one of the ones I really like. It has a beautiful meaning and an interesting look and sound to it. It has a futuristic look to it which I like.

I never thought this could be a name until years ago when I watched the movie Honey. The title character Honey was played by Jessica Alba. It's such a sweet name, LOL!

Basil

Meaning: (Royal, Kingly, Regal, Brave, Valiant, Saint Basil the Great was a 4th-century bishop of Caesarea and one of the fathers of the early Christian church. Due to him, the name (in various spellings) has come into general use in the Christian world, being especially popular among Eastern Christians. It was also borne by two Byzantine emperors. Medieval Personal Name. Movie Star Basil Rathbone.)

Origin: (Greek, French, English, Arabic, American)

Pronunciation: (BAZ-el, BAYZ-el, Go to this site and run your cursor over Basil to hear how it is said: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=basil&submit=Submit)

Gender: Male

I was flipping around on T.V the other day and started watching The Great Mouse Detective a movie I used to love when I was a kid. The mouse on there is the Sherlock Holmes of the mouse world and lives below the actual Sherlock Holmes residence. The mouse is called Basil of Baker's Street. The author of the books which the movie was based on chose the name Basil in honor of Basil Rathbone the actor which played Sherlock Holmes in many early Sherlock Holmes movies. Basil is traditionally pronounced BAZ-el but many say BAYZ-el because of the Herb. I say it both ways depending on the contexts.

Hattie / Hatty

Meaning: (Home Ruler, Variant of Harriet, Henrietta.)

Origin: (Old German, American)

Pronunciation: (HAT-ee)

Gender: Female

I have used Hattie as the name of one of my characters crazy mother. This is also the name of Tori Spellings new baby. I like this name, it is old fashioned yet still modern in a way. It is sweet and it is short and easy to pronounce so there are few if any draw backs to this name.

Journey

Meaning: (A Journey, A Trip or Experience from One Place to Another.)

Origin: (English, American)

Pronunciation: (JUWR-nee)

Scout

Meaning: (Observer, To Listen, First Explorer, Occupational name: someone who gathers information quietly. Scout Finch (Jean Louise Finch), the main character in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird.)

Origin: (Old French, American, English)

Pronunciation: (SKOWT, Go to this site and run your cursor over Scout to hear how it is said: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=scout&submit=Submit)

Gender: Uni-Sex

I thought this was a weird name when I read To Kill a Mockingbird when I was in High School. Then a few years ago I watched a show called Scout's Safari. It was about a girl named Scout though that wasn't her real name either just like the Scout in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. In recent years I have heard this often. I think Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's daughter together is named Scout. I kind of really like the name now. Though if I used it I might give my character a real name and have them be nicknamed Scout. This is a cool name with a cool meaning and I think if this isn't used too much it could still seem unique in novels.

Meridian

Meaning: (Imaginary circle around the Earth, Middle, Center, Literal definition of the name: The highest point, especially in one's lives; culmination. An imaginary line on the Earth’s surface from the North Pole to the South Pole, The term "meridian" comes from the Latin meridies, meaning "midday"; the sun crosses a given meridian midway between the times of sunrise and sunset on that meridian. The same Latin stem gives rise to the terms a.m. (ante meridiem) and p.m. (post meridiem) used to disambiguate hours of the day when using the 12-hour clock.)

Origin: (English, American, Latin)

Pronunciation: (mə-RI-dee-ən, Go to this site and run your cursor over Meridian to hear how it is said: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=meridian&submit=Submit)

Gender: Female, perhaps Uni-Sex

The other day I misheard a characters name on one of those old Batman movies. I thought the ladies first name was Meridian but it was her last name. But after first thinking it was a first name I fell in love with it as a given name. I did some research and saw that it has been given as a real first name to people before. I think it is a pretty name and has a great meaning. I think that this name could be given to a character and there could be many reasons why, it's up to the author to share those reasons or hold back the reasons. I think it would just make a cool given name.

I try to have the most accurate Meanings, Origin and Pronunciations for the names on this blog. It is best though to do research into the names you decide to use for your characters as there can be errors on my blog. Or meanings, origins, and pronunciations I have not seen thus not been able to add to this blog.
