Character Naming

As an Author naming your Character is an important step right after coming up with the plot. I am here to help you choose the right character name for you and your story.

Make sure your character name is Genre Appropriate. Make sure if it's a Historical Fiction novel or takes place in a real time period that the name was used then. Or if it's a fictionalized place then you can be as creative as you wish.

Just have fun with naming your character. It is after all your story.

Mirabai

Meaning: (Wealthy, High Born, Ocean, Limit, Boundary, Prosperous, 16th century Indian poet and singer, also called Meera.)

Origin: (Sanskrit, Hindu)

Pronunciation: (Meer-ah-bye, Mee-ra-BYE)

Gender: Female

I forget where I saw this name but when I did see it I really loved the foreign look. However the pronunciation throws me off as I want to pronounce it meer-ah-bay not meer-ah-bye. I love the meanings a lot and the whole look is divine and breathtakingly beautiful. If you do use it a good nickname option, for English speakers who might get a bit infuriated trying to say this name, could be Mira. It has wonderfully long history of use so it could fit just about any century going back to the 16th Century and probably even before that. You could do some research and see if maybe it was used before then.

Shyla

Meaning: (Daughter of the Mountain, Goddess, and Hindu Mythology: One of the names of the Goddess Parvati. Variant of Sheila which is an Anglicized form of SÍLE which is an Irish form of Cecilia- Latinate feminine form of the Roman family name Caecilius, which was derived from Latin caecus "blind". Saint Cecilia was a semi-legendary 2nd- or 3rd-century martyr who was sentenced to die because she refused to worship the Roman gods. After attempts to suffocate her failed, she was beheaded. She was later regarded as the patron saint of music and musicians.

Due to the popularity of the saint, the name became common in the Christian world during the Middle Ages. The Normans brought it to England, where it was commonly spelled Cecily - the Latinate form Cecilia came into use in the 18th century.)

Origin: (Hindu, Hindi, English)

Pronunciation: (SHY-lah, SHIY-lə, SHY-la)

Gender: Female, Possibly Uni-Sex

I saw this somewhere online when I was looking for another name. I kind of really like it. It has pretty look and is easily pronounceable. I like the meanings and the over all look of this. I do think this would be cool if maybe a sibling name could be Shiloh *see on list of posts*. I think they look and sound alike but could still be sibling names. Or maybe Shyla could be used instead of Shiloh as they sound similar until you get to the end, like LUH versus LOH. It is also a nice alternative to the variant of the name which is Cecilia *see on list of posts*. Though I’ll admit not too many will know Shyla is a variant of Cecilia, it was a surprise to me.

Gender: Male, Possibly Uni-Sex

I was watching Law and Order: Special Victims Unit one day and this guy was some sort of investigator. His name was Ashok Ramsey. I love names that have Ash in them. It’s a very foreign sounding yet handsome name. I love the lovely meanings. It has a nice long history of use. I don’t see this often but I would love to see it in novels. It might be used just not much among English speakers.

Divya

Meaning: (The Devine, Devine Brilliance, Devine Lustre, Heavenly)

Origin: (Indian, Sanskrit, Hindu)

Pronunciation: (Div-ee-uh, Div-yuh, DIV-ya, d ee v y uh, d ih v- y ah)

Gender: Female

I hit the wrong channel the other day and saw a few minutes of the show Royal Pains and I heard the one Indian character ladies name. Her name was Divya and I really liked the sound of it. Upon looking it up I instantly loved the meanings as well. It's a beautiful name. I recently saw people post about the name Devine and forgive me it sounds like an exotic dancers name. Divya on the other hand has the meaning Devine but has a more exotic look and sound and is much prettier.

I try to have the most accurate Meanings, Origin and Pronunciations for the names on this blog. It is best though to do research into the names you decide to use for your characters as there can be errors on my blog. Or meanings, origins, and pronunciations I have not seen thus not been able to add to this blog.
