Character Naming

As an Author naming your Character is an important step right after coming up with the plot. I am here to help you choose the right character name for you and your story.

Make sure your character name is Genre Appropriate. Make sure if it's a Historical Fiction novel or takes place in a real time period that the name was used then. Or if it's a fictionalized place then you can be as creative as you wish.

Just have fun with naming your character. It is after all your story.

Laureline

Meaning: (Laurel, Noble)

Origin: (Germanic, Latin, French)

Pronunciation: (Lor-uh-leen, Lor-ah-lina)

Gender: (Female)

I was watching a movie a few months back called Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, from 2017, which the movie is based on the comics which I don’t have much knowledge of but I do have to say that I really loved the main girls name Laureline. It sounds adorable and fresh and so cute! I honestly would love to use this name in a novel. It seems to look and sound old fashioned yet on the flip sounds modern at times so all around I love it.

Darby

Meaning- (Deer Farm, Deer Settlement, From the Deer Estate, Free from Envy, it is a place name and surname)

Origin- (Old English, Irish, Norse)

Pronunciation- (DAR-bee)

Gender- (Female, Uni-Sex)

I was looking up unique girls names and came across this one. It reminds me of Derby and or Derbyshire but it is a cute name and seems unique having once been a place name and surname. The meanings are sweet and the over all looks is nice. I can see preppy character being named this, think Buffy and Darby lol!

Cassia

Meaning: (Cinnamon, Cassia Spice which is a variety of Cinnamon)

Origin: (Greek, Latin)

Pronunciation: (cas-ee-uh, KAH-sha, KASS-ya)

Gender: (Female, Uni-Sex)

I have seen this name used a bit more of late and I really do like it. I have used the other variant Keziah *see on list of posts* before which I love but this version seems more feminine and softer in its look. Either way I love the meaning and the all around look and it fits in the past and present and future so it is versatile.

Aelia

Meaning: (Solar, Sun, Helios, Feminine form of Aelius which was the family name of the Roman Emperor Hadrian)

Origin: (Greek, Ancient Roman)

Pronunciation: (IE-lee-a, ai-eh-l-y-ah)

Gender: (Female)

I was looking up sun related names of the past and came across this one and I like how it looks with the Ae at the beginning as I tend to see these names being almost alien looking lol. I love the history of this name and how it can fit in different eras. I can see a beautiful dark beauty being named this. I also love the way it sounds when said, just so beautiful.

Aeliana

Meaning: (Sun, feminine form of Aelianus)

Origin: (Latin, Ancient Roman)

Pronunciation: (ee-lee-AHN-a, ie-lee-AHN-a)

Gender: (Female, Uni-Sex)

I have the name Eliana *see on list of posts* already on here and actually love it a lot and Anthony and I would love Eliana to be the name of a future daughter we hope to have some day. Now when I saw Aeliana I think it is lovely and very much fits in a historical novel. Its really pretty. I prefer Eliana but I like Aeliana for a character lol.

Eirlys

Meaning: (Snowdrop)

Origin: (Welsh, English)

Pronunciation: (EY-RLihS

Gender: (Female, Uni-Sex)

I was looking for a snow related name to change one of my characters last names to in an already finished novel from a few years ago. I found this one and it fits the theme of the name and it fits the origin of the fantasy nation they are from as they have many Welsh and Old English names. I think this name reminds me of another character in the novels name Eirwyn *see on list of posts* and both I love the look and meaning and pronunciations so much! I intend to look into more welsh names soon. This name reminds me of a beautiful maiden bright and crisp as her name sake.

Rysa

Meaning: (Laughter, variant of Risa)

Origin: (Latin)

Pronunciation: (RihSAH)

Gender: (Female, Uni-Sex)

I have the variant Risa *see on list of posts* already on this blog but I came across this variant and I think I almost prefer it better. They seem with the change of one letter to be different names all together and I like that. Plus one seems when looked at more masculine and one more feminine, to me anyway. I think the meaning is very lovely and beautiful. It is a short and sweet name and not too hard to wrap your mind around when read.

Melyonen

Meaning: (A modern Cornish vocabulary name meaning Violet, Born of the Sea)

Origin: (Cornish, Old Welsh)

Pronunciation: (mel-YON-en, mel-YONN-en)

Gender: (Female, Uni-Sex)

I think of a maiden that lives in a sea side village in the middle ages or a fantasy realm being named this. It is very pretty and seems to roll well off the tongue when said or at least for me. The meanings are pretty and I think it would be cute if the character was nicknamed Mely or Melly kind of like Nelly. I have a story I think this would be absolutely perfect in!

Emi

Meaning: (Blessing, Picture, Beauty, A Smile, Blessed with Beauty)

Origin: (Japanese)

Pronunciation: (EH-mee, EHM-iy)

Gender: (Female)

This is a short but beautiful meaning name but I can’t remember where I first saw this but I think is very lovely and makes me think of a Japanese beautiful warrior like character. This would be cute as an animals name as well.

Lacy or Lacey or Lacie

Meaning- (Belonging to Lacy or Lassy, Resembling or Consisting of Lace)

Origin- (English, French)

Pronunciation: (LAY-see)

Gender: (Female)

So my brother-in-law Andrew (my husbands brother) is getting married September 1st 2018 to a sweet lovely young woman named Lacy. So the name Lacy is an old fashioned but still relevant name with lots of charm. It could fit in many different eras and fit a wide range of characters. I think I like the spellings Lacey and Lacie best but any spelling is truly pretty and the name meaning is pretty cause who doesn’t like lace!

Echeveria

Meaning: ("The new house", a surname of Basque origin spelled Etxeberria in that language and widespread in Spanish speaking countries. Plants may be evergreen or deciduous. Flowers on short stalks (cymes) arise from compact rosettes of succulent fleshy, often brightly coloured leaves. Species are polycarpic, meaning that they may flower and set seed many times over the course of their lifetimes. Often numerous offsets are produced, and are commonly known as "hen and chicks", which can also refer to other genera, such as Sempervivum, that are significantly different from Echeveria.

The genus is named after the 18th century Mexican botanical artist Atanasio Echeverría y Godoy.)

Origin: (Basque)

Pronunciation: (ech-uh-vuh-ree-uh)

Gender: Female

I was in the garden center at Wal-Mart waiting for my boyfriend to get lunch and I was looking at some plants and I saw one that had the name Echeveria and I was like that is very foreign and beautiful. The meaning and origin is unique and very much a fresh start like meaning. This is a name best suited for a fantasy novel in my opinion if used as a characters name. However it would be really cool to see a planet named this in a novel as well.

Annalina

Meaning: (Graceful Light)

Origin: (Swedish)

Pronunciation: (A-nə-LEE-nə, AN ah LEE nah)

Gender: Female

I was hitting a name drought so I got my character naming book off my shelf and flipped through and came across this name. It is beautiful but also just basically like a combination of double barrel names like Anna and Lina. It’s a beautiful combination of one common name Anna and one less common name Lina. The meaning is so light and airy and feminine and the whole name as a whole just seems so breathtakingly beautiful.

Ivalyn

Meaning: (A climbing evergreen ornamental plant, Ivalyn is an alternate form of Ivy)

Origin: (English, Old English, English Nature Name)

Pronunciation: (IHVAHLihN)

Gender: Female

My boyfriend Anthony had a cat when growing up that he nicknamed Ivalyn though her name was Ivy. Ivalyn is such a pretty unique take to give more depth to the simple name Ivy. Ivalyn seems an old lady like name but if used in a Historical Fiction novel it could be used on a younger character. It is very beautiful and ethereal in a way and Ivy plants are very much plants I associate with fairy tales. This could be very pretty if used for either a peasant girl or a girl of nobility like Lady Ivalyn or Princess Ivalyn or Duchess Ivalyn.

Syntyche

Meaning: (With Fortune (Success), Common Fate)

Origin: (Biblical, Ancient Greek)

Pronunciation: (SIN-tə-kee (English))

Gender: Female

I was reading an article in The Watchtower magazine at my religious meeting not long ago and it was talking about the conflict between two biblical women Euodia *see on list of posts* and Syntyche. When I saw the names I was like those are so interesting but kind of pretty in the same respect. They have such amazing gorgeous meanings and they are rare but unique and it gives an amazing charm. Syntyche is a little harder to wrap my mind around and pronounce as well but it is very lovely and ethereal in a way. However it would be harder on a reader but then again I’ve seen worse names in novels before and at least this one has a sound solid foundation and history.

Euodia

Meaning: (Sweet Fragrance, Prosperous Journey, Good Way, Prospering)

Origin: (Biblical, Greek)

Pronunciation: (yoo-od-EE-ah, yew-oh-DEE-ah)

Gender: Female

I was reading an article in The Watchtower magazine at my religious meeting not long ago and it was talking about the conflict between two biblical women Euodia and Syntyche *see on list of posts*. When I saw the names I was like those are so interesting but kind of pretty in the same respect. They have such amazing gorgeous meanings and they are rare but unique and it gives an amazing charm. Euodia is lovely and very feminine and flows well like I can see a Grecian historical woman being named this. The pronunciations are pretty straight forward and easy enough.

Mechthild

Meaning: (Mechthild is a variant of Matilda (English, Italian, Portuguese, and Scandinavian). Matilda of Gothic derivation, derived from words corresponding to Old High German "Maht" (meaning "Might, Strength") and "Hild" (meaning "Battle").)

Origin: (Irish, Germanic)

Pronunciation: (MEKHT-hilt, MEHK-THAYLD)

Gender: Female

I was looking at a YA novel a few days ago and after seeing one of the characters being named Mairead *see on list of posts* I looked at the authors name and it is Mechthild and I think is a very interesting looking name. The meanings are very strong and brave. This is a derivation of Matilda *see on list of posts* and so if you want something that has the same meaning as Matilda but that looks vastly different then Mechthild is the way to go.

The pronunciation again just throws me off like most Irish names and sounds funny when I say this name so I wouldn’t be likely to use it and it may be a down fall to readers so it should be used sparingly by an author lest the reader be so thrown off by the names pronunciation that it becomes burdensome to read anymore.

Mairead

Meaning: (Scottish form of Margaret from the root for Pearl, name of a saint.)

Origin: (Irish, Scottish)

Pronunciation: (Muh-raid)

Gender: Female

I was looking at a YA novel a few days ago and one of the characters had this name. I love Irish names just as much as Japanese names as the meanings are lovely but with Irish names the look of the name is what gets me the most. This name has such a very pretty look about it and the meaning is very old but beautiful. The only down fall is the pronunciation of this name but that’s the down fall with me and many Irish names, the pronunciation throws me off often.

Natisa

Meaning: (Birth Goddess)

Origin: (Hindi, Hindi Mythology)

Pronunciation: (nah-tee-suh)

Gender: Female

I was looking up another name Nagisa *see on list of posts* and I came across this similar spelled name. This is a very interesting foreign like name with an interesting meaning. This is definitely a rare unique name. It has a very other worldly like flare which brings a different kind of charm to the name.

Natira

Meaning: (Nature, Left, Last)

Origin: (Filipino)

Pronunciation: (nah-TEER-ah)

Gender: Female

This is a Star Trek name but I think from the older Star Trek TV series. The meanings I could find I can’t really guarantee are right but they are nice and all I could find. The name and pronunciation is very fantasy like. I can see a princess on another world being named this. It is such a very lovely rare unique name.

Eiliwedd

Meaning: (Saint Eluned (Welsh: Eiliwedd; Latin: Almedha or Elevetha), also known as Aled and by other names, was a 5th- or 6th-century virgin martyr from modern Brecon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Eluned )

Origin: (Welsh, Welsh Mythology)

Pronunciation: (eh-lee-eye-wed, ee-ah-lah-wedd, ee-ah-lah-weth)

Gender: Female, Possibly Uni-Sex

I saw this name when I was looking up the name Brychan *see on list of posts*. Eiliwedd was the daughter of King Brychan. I think this is a pretty interesting looking name and the information I found about it was interesting and it has a long history of use that would make it great in a Historical Fiction novel.

Now the pronunciation I am not sure about at all and could find no pronunciation except for the first part Eili and so I did my best with the pronunciation and on the last one this name being Welsh I am assuming Wedd is sounding like weth slightly, not sure if I have that right at all. If anyone knows the real pronunciation please leave a comment in the comment section of this post and please let me know what it is.
