Character Naming

As an Author naming your Character is an important step right after coming up with the plot. I am here to help you choose the right character name for you and your story.

Make sure your character name is Genre Appropriate. Make sure if it's a Historical Fiction novel or takes place in a real time period that the name was used then. Or if it's a fictionalized place then you can be as creative as you wish.

Just have fun with naming your character. It is after all your story.

Mordecai

Meaning: (Warrior, Little Man, from "Mara Dachya" meaning "Pure Myrrh", the aromatic resin which was used in incense.)

Origin: (Biblical, Hebrew, Persian, Aramaic)

Pronunciation: (MOHR-də-kiy, mor-də-KIE, MAWR-də-kie (English), mor'-de-ki, mor-de-ka'-I, mordekhay)

Gender: Male

I am so surprised I haven’t added this very nice strong Biblical name before. A relatively new friend Cameron *see on list of posts* told me that if he ever has a son in the future he would want to name him Mordecai. Mordecai in the Bible was the cousin of Esther *see on list of posts* and many years ago we had a Biblical drama about Esther and Mordecai at one of our religious conventions. I like the strong meanings of this name and the whole general look of the name is very nice.

I think Mordecai would do well in a historical fiction novel as it has a strong biblical history.  If used in a historical fiction novel and dealing with sensitive topics of the past it would do well on a character thats perhaps down and out, but comes back strong. Though also it seems like it would do well in a science fiction / fantasy novel set in space as it would be interesting to have that very old name be set in the future on a character. A cute nickname could be Mordy.

Tamsin

Meaning: (Twin, Contracted form of Thomosina. It was traditionally used in Cornwall.)

Origin: (English, Aramaic)

Pronunciation:  (TAM-sin, TAEMZihN)

Gender: Female

I was watching a TV show and a character on the show was named Tamsin. I like the name and the pronunciation but not a huge fan of it being a short form of Thomasina. I mean Thomasina is a fine name but I don’t hear it enough to really care for it. I have a male cat named Thomas but we call him Tom Tom or Tommy so even then I don’t use Thomas all that much. The meaning is nice and so this name could be used for a twin and could be used in reference to where it is popular, Cornwall, Britain.

Shera

Meaning: (Light, Brightness, Singer, Plain, Darling, Man, Free Man, Meadow Shire, Bright Meadow)

Origin: (Hebrew, French, Germanic, Old English, English, Aramaic)

Pronunciation: (SHIHERAH, sher-ah)

Gender: Female

Like the name Orly and Orah *see on list of posts* this has a light meaning. At the time I put this name on my list for this blog I was looking for short names that mean light because I wanted that meaning for my characters daughters’ name. Even though the reader doesn’t know the meaning I still like to have a desirable meaning name for my character. I should say I first saw this on my favorite show Heroes of Cosplay on Syfy channel. I love the cosplayers and the cool costumes they make. One of the cosplayers portrayed She-Ra princess of power, so I took out the dash and got Shera.

The meanings are beautiful, I know I use the word beautiful a lot but some names are just really pretty all around and this is one that strikes me as a very beautiful goddess or princess or even Japanese maiden like name. The meanings I really love especially Meadow Shire and Bright Meadow because it has a very maiden of the meadows look.

Barnabas

Meaning: (Son of Comfort, Biblical: A traveling companion of Paul's. The close association that Barnabas had with Paul, and that extended over the years, had its beginning about three years after Paul’s conversion when he wanted to get in touch with the Jerusalem congregation. How Barnabas first got to meet Paul is not revealed. But it was Barnabas who had the privilege of introducing Paul to Peter and to the disciple James. Barnaby is used more often now in Britain. One of Charles Dickens' lesser-known novels is named "Barnaby Rudge". The name is used from time to time among literary parents. Bernabe is a Spanish form.)

Origin: (Greek, Aramaic, Biblical)

Pronunciation: (BAR-nuh-bus, BAR-na-bus, Go to this site and run your cursor over Barnabas to hear how it is said: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=barnabas&submit=Submit)

Gender: Male

Again I saw this is in the bible again and I thought I might as well add it here on my blog. It is a name you really don't hear often but I love it. The meaning is really nice and I think it is such a cute name. I am sure a lot of people might be down on this biblical name but I absolutely love it.

I try to have the most accurate Meanings, Origin and Pronunciations for the names on this blog. It is best though to do research into the names you decide to use for your characters as there can be errors on my blog. Or meanings, origins, and pronunciations I have not seen thus not been able to add to this blog.
