Character Naming

As an Author naming your Character is an important step right after coming up with the plot. I am here to help you choose the right character name for you and your story.

Make sure your character name is Genre Appropriate. Make sure if it's a Historical Fiction novel or takes place in a real time period that the name was used then. Or if it's a fictionalized place then you can be as creative as you wish.

Just have fun with naming your character. It is after all your story.

Kieron

Meaning: (Black, Beam of Light, Dark, Little Dark One, Variant of Kieran and Kiran. Popular for over 1500 years, at least 26 Saints have borne the name.)

Origin: (Irish, Gaelic, Hindi, Sanskrit)

Pronunciation: (KIH-R-aeN, ke-ronh, kee-ron, keer-awn, keer-in)

Gender: Male

I was looking up another name and stumbled upon this name, which happens a lot, LOL! The meanings I really like a lot. The look is different and seems a handsome sort of name. This name reminded me a lot of a main character in one of my stories who is named Kiernan. With such a long use and history this name would be a wonderful character name for an author. I don’t know if I will use it even though I love it because I will confuse myself because of its close look to my characters name Kiernan. Also I might not realize that I may try to make any Kieron be too similar to Kiernan in looks, personality, background, everything. That said I love this name and would love to see it used more often. Oh also I think my writer friend might have used this name, but not sure. But I keep thinking she has but I don’t know.

  1. It's my first time seeing the Kieron variation. The letter O makes the name seem stronger (at least visually).

I've always liked the names Kieran and Kiernan... and Keira for a girl (I do favor 'ei' over 'ie'). If I ever have a black-haired daughter, I would name her Keira.

It seems we both like similar names. Do you have your stories online or are they published in books/e-books? I'd love to read them.

    1. It does sound indeed like we like similar names. That has happened a lot lately with me and one of my good friends who is also a writer. We will talk and share story ideas and such and realize not only are the names similar and we like them for about the same reason but that even our story themes are similar.

I have actually posted about the name Keira if you haven’t already seen it. I posted about it Saturday September 8, 2012 posting title as Keira / Kyra / Kira.

I have actually used the name Keira as a main characters daughter’s name. My main character has twins, a boy and a girl. She chose the names because of the origin and its’ association to the twins father. Keira’s twin brother is named Sebastian “Bastian”. My main character also chose the name Keira because the father of the twins has a twin brother himself and his twin brother is named Kiernan. My main character is best friends with Kiernan *her babies fathers twin brother* and loves him like a brother too so she names Keira *Kiernan’s niece* to be similar in look and meanings to Kiernan, as a respectful honor thing. I hope that makes sense, LOL!

I do really like the look and meanings of Keira. It is a really beautiful name. It would be a name that ages well too. So that will be a nice choice for your future daughter’s name.

As for Kieron I think it does have a strong look and sound to it. I do however keep wanting to pronounce it KYE-ron because of the ie instead of ei.

And no I do not have any of my stories online. I am so weary of those writing sites a bit. I think those writing sites and forums are good for writers seeking feed back and I wish I wasn’t so scared of them, LOL. When I do need feedback I go to my fellow un-published writer friend. She is a really good editor and helps me tons.

I am however in the processes of sending out Query letters to Literary Agents, trying to get one to represent me and my works. I will for sure post like crazy if and when I get an agent and publisher and then later when my works get published. :~)

I want to get published so bad I can taste it but breaking into the published world is harder then some think. It’s a very subjective and selective market. Literary Agents reject 99% of the query letters they receive.

I know some day I shall be published and I love this quote: You must keep sending work out; you must never let a manuscript do nothing but eat its head off in a drawer. You send that work out again and again, while you're working on another one. If you have talent, you will receive some measure of success - but only if you persist. – Isaac Asimov

But if I should for some reason not be published then I always remind myself I love writing and won’t stop just because I can’t get published.

Oh goodness I have sadly run on and on, that’s just like me, LOL! Sorry!

    2. Yeah, my dad is also working on getting his book published, so I know the tediousness behind it all. I think he's going the self-publish, e-book route. However, he's working on a linguistics book, so I wouldn't be interested in reading his work once it's published (sorry, Dad) :p

It might take years to finally have your stories published, but it will happen because you have that undying passion for writing. And getting there might be difficult, but every obstacle along the way will help you improve to be stronger. So it's almost like a progression of win's.

      So write on, sister!

    3. A linguistics book, that’s interesting. Tell your father I hope he is fortunate in getting his book published and into the hands of his target readers. :~)

When I first looked into getting published I thought of going the self-publishing route. But I realized that it seemed harder on the author going that route. You pay out to getting it professionally edited, and then you pay to have certain copies made. Then it is the self-publishing author’s hard job to get the book publicized.

If an author goes the literary agent route it is a bit smoother I hear. The lit agent works with and sometimes has in their agency editors, so the author isn’t paying out of pocket for editing. Also the lit agent is the go between the author and potential publishers. They know what publisher is looking for what type of book and if the author’s book fits the bill. The lit agents gets anywhere between 15-20% of sales, so they get paid when the author’s book sells. So it is in their best interest to do all they can to make the book sell as best as it can. I realized that the lit agent route might be best for me if I wish to sell more then a few copies the self-publishing route.

Though I have known some that went the self-publishing / e-publishing route and did quite well and then later went with a lit agent and large publisher for future books. I think it depends on the person and what their book is all about as to which route they take in attempting to get published…. So like with your dad he might do really well going the self-publishing / e-publishing route where as it might be a bad route for someone like me because of the type of books I write…of course I never say never so I might some day go that route (self-publishing).

I have been trying to get published for 4 years now but in the beginning I did realize I messed up a bit in querying lit agents. So it has been a live and learn experience. I have learned and grown a lot and fortunately I have been able to help others, by giving advice and showing them the sites that helped me learn more so as to get to the point I am at.

I have had my fair share of critics and downers. I have had people I know who have said why don’t you just stop trying to get published after I receive a rejection from a lit agent. Others think all I do is write and they think that it’s a waste of time and it won’t go anywhere. So I take that and use that to push me to really be determined to succeed and ultimately get published.

Of course I do have those that support me in my DREAM! And I know they have faith in me and that is just as powerful a push as the downers to make me determined to get published.

LOL….I will write on, THANKS! :~)

One of these days I am going to learn to not write so much in these comments sections so the reader of the comments doesn’t have to read so much, lol. It is becoming almost like the emails I send to friends and family, I write and write and write and before I know it is like 4 -7 paragraphs long or longer, LOL! :~)
