Character Naming

As an Author naming your Character is an important step right after coming up with the plot. I am here to help you choose the right character name for you and your story.

Make sure your character name is Genre Appropriate. Make sure if it's a Historical Fiction novel or takes place in a real time period that the name was used then. Or if it's a fictionalized place then you can be as creative as you wish.

Just have fun with naming your character. It is after all your story.

Meaning: (Sea, Derived from dylif ‘Flood’; dy ‘Great’; llanw ‘Flow, Tide’. Welsh Mythology: Dylan Eli Ton (‘Son of the Wave’) was the God of the Sea, the son of Aranrhod, and the twin of Lleu Llaw Gyffes. The name has been popularized by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1953), and in modern times by the US folksinger Bob Dylan (1941-). The singer, generally known as Dylan, adopted the poets surname as his stage name after being inspired by the Marshal Matt Dillon character in the popular TV western series Gunsmoke (1955-1975). In the late 20th Century, the name of the lead character Dylan McKay portrayed by Luke Perry in the primetime TV series Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000). The name Dilyn (English) is the female version of Dylan.)

Origin: (Welsh, Welsh Mythology)

Pronunciation: (DIHLahn (English), DAHLaen (Welsh))

Gender: Uni-Sex

I was watching the Syfy show Primeval: New World and one of the female leads is named Dylan. Until then I didn’t see this as Uni-Sex name. I have never been a fan of the name Dylan. I always thought it was used too much and the look and pronunciation always got to me, the wrong way. Now I do know a few Dylan’s and I want them and other Dylan’s to know that I don’t mind their names, I just don’t love them either. I mean as of now I can’t see naming one of my characters this, not to say I won’t but I often don’t name characters after people I know in the real world. Though I would think of using the female version Dilyn.

It is a decent name though and I do however love the meanings and Welsh Mythology surrounding this name. For those that are thinking of using this I could see a bad boy / warrior type character being named this or the total opposite a very nerdy character being named this. This is a very versatile name with a good long history, so it would fit well in many different genres and eras.
